five minute friday ~ last
My first try at Five Minute Friday was pretty raw, and it was hard not to keep typing when the timer went off, but I’m giving it another shot! It’s good writing practice. The whole idea came from Lisa Jo Baker, who says that, “Writing is like a mirror, we see ourselves best in what we’ve written.”
Every Friday for close to three years, writers have gathered on her blog site for “a kind of free write flash mob”. The goal is to spend just five minutes writing on the same topic. And then bloggers link up on her site.
Today’s topic is “last.” Here we go….
The alarm goes off and her heart immediately sinks. This day is too much, and it hasn’t even begun yet.
Her feet hit the floor and she wonders what will come against her first. Will it be strife with her husband? Will it be stifling demands from the children? Will it be a bill collector on the phone? That one surely awaits later in the day. What will come first?
Failures line up before her to accuse. Fears come banging on her heart and mind. Unanswered prayers and unmet needs swirl around her and she doesn’t know which way is up.
Thoughts of loved ones stuck in the same kind of sink hole tear at her heart. Finally, she is able to utter His name.
“God…”
What is going on? How long will this last?
The courage to be still and listen for an answer is there.
A whisper, simple and direct.
“Isaiah 28.”
“Is that You, God?”
Intrigued, desperate for a real answer, she turns to the passage.
Listen and hear my voice;
pay attention and hear what I say.
When a farmer plows for planting,
does he plow continually?
Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?
When he has leveled the surface,
does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin?
Does he not plant wheat in its place,
barley in its plot, and spelt in its field?
His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.
Grain must be ground to make bread;
so one does not go on threshing it forever.
The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it,
but one does not use horses to grind grain.
All this also comes from the Lord Almighty,
whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.Isaiah 28:23-26, 28-29
Your season of threshing will not last forever.

Amazingly awesome post. Welcome to FMF, glad you are here.
I needed to hear this today. I feel as if I have been sprinting and sprinting, but not really getting anywhere. Life is overwhelming, work seems endless, and I’m just flat out…tired. Thank you for sharing this, it has lifted me up a little. I’ll take a little. 🙂

Loved it. I’ve thought of doing the FMF too. So hard for me to post an unedited blog post though! Vanity? Probably. 🙂
That passage of scripture really confirmed what God has been speaking to me about seasons of the spiritual life, and how no season lasts forever. The ‘good’ ones or the hard ones. They all have a beginning and an end, and it’s so important that we move with HIM from season to season – He is my only true constant.
Angie, it is SO hard to publish without really being able to wrap it all up with a tidy little tag and bow!! I let myself finish the sentence I’m on when the timer goes off, and I try to wrap it up. But I find that I’m so tense the whole time that the writing is not really my true voice! I guess practice will grow and stretch me. 🙂
