Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.  Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.  For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. 1 Peter 3:3-5

We live in a world that values outward beauty. Today’s unrealistic and demanding standard of beauty slams against our self-image daily. Even in the church, there is talk about ensuring that our bodily temples are small enough to be worthy of God.

Yet scripture is clear about where beauty comes from. We see in the verses above that our beauty does not come from our outward appearance. Not from our hair, accessories, or clothes. Notice that bodies and body size are not mentioned at all in this passage. Inner beauty is important to God. If He valued a certain size body, wouldn’t it be mentioned here, where the criteria for beauty is clearly outlined?

It’s right there in the Bible. God values the unfading beauty of your inner self. He knows that physical attractiveness fades over time, but inner beauty shines and actually becomes brighter as we are transformed by the Lord year after year.

God is cultivating a gentle and humble beauty in us as we become more and more like Jesus… the most humble and gentle One of all. God is also developing a quiet beauty in us, as we learn to trust Him more completely and have less need to complain, worry, or control.

Beloved, it’s time to let go of the world’s standard of beauty and embrace the inner beauty that God places a high priority on. If He wanted you to be in a smaller body without rolls or wrinkles, He would have said so Himself.

Give yourself permission to serve Him in the body you have today.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the holiday season? Last year, I waited too long to decorate and start planning. The season went by so fast that I struggled to feel joyful and present. This year, I’d like things to go differently! Are you with me?

Let’s start by praying together:

Lord, would you begin preparing my heart for the holidays? I want to have a plan and be prepared, so that I don’t feel overwhelmed. Show me how to be intentional, creating meaningful moments of thanksgiving and spiritual reflection. Help me to be a good steward, spending within my means and not creating unnecessary debt. Change my perspective to focus on honoring you, rather than trying to make others happy. In Jesus' name, amen.

Whipping up a to-do list and schedule might come easy for some of us. However, I sense that we need the Lord to show us how to proceed.

Let’s consider a few questions:

  • What is God calling me to this holiday season?
  • What do I want to experience during the holidays?
  • What do I need to let go of this season?
  • How do I want to feel when the holidays are over?

I recommend doing some journaling. When I spent time putting pen to paper, I realized that what I am longing for is a more meaningful holiday season, and I feel strongly that God is calling me in that direction. When the holidays are over, I want to feel like I used my time, energy, and money for memorable and spiritually significant experiences with my loved ones. I need to let go of things that don’t meet my “meaningful” criteria.

The awareness we gain from thoughtfully and prayerfully answering the questions above will help us decide what we want to do during the upcoming season, and what we want to say no to. My mistake last year was waiting too long to get “in the mood” and then taking on too many things with the little time and energy that I had. I realize that without some intentional prayer and planning, I will likely repeat last year’s holiday experience.

So what now?

Download my free Holiday Planning Guide with more prayer and journal prompts (the questions above are just a sample). Allow what God shows you through seeking Him and writing to set the tone for the holidays. Use the goals or criteria that come from your reflection to guide your decisions.

Check-in with your family. Let them know what you’ve decided about the holidays. Find out what really matters to them so that you are not spending energy on things that aren’t valuable.

What did you need help with last year? Start asking for help or delegating now. If you can’t get help, then maybe the event or tradition isn’t worth it. Keep in mind that children and teenagers are capable of helping and might even benefit from having some duties for the holidays!

Begin putting important events on your calendar. Remember that we are only scheduling things that meet our holiday criteria. We’re saying no to things that don’t. We’re saying no to non-essential things that stressed and drained us last year.

Set reminders so that time does not get away from you. I made a list of my holiday priorities and created weekly reminders in my phone’s calendar for each of them. I chose to create my reminders on Sunday afternoons because I know it’s a consistently unscheduled and unhurried time of the week. I like the pace of having to think about only one or two holiday tasks a week.

Here’s to a prayerful, joyful, and meaningful holiday season!

>>> he delights in you

This verse caught me off guard when it appeared on my daily Bible verse app a few weeks ago. You delight in my way, Lord? What does that mean?

I checked to see if the verse meant to say that a person delights in God’s way. A few translations of the Bible state it that way, but most present it as I initially read it.  You delight in me, Lord?

Why is this so hard to believe?

We tend to be so much more critical of ourselves than God is of us. I know this because as I press in and listen to Him, the Holy Spirit whispers compassionate and affectionate things to me far more than correction. And often, the word of correction is about how I need to be more patient and gentle with myself.

We tend to focus on our weaknesses and failures, thinking those things disqualify us from being delightful to Him. But He doesn’t focus on those things.

He sees His very image embedded in you. He sees the seed of faith growing in your heart. He sees the desire to be in agreement with Him rising up in you. He sees your willingness to keep walking with Him.

Beloved, He delights in you!
